Official
contacts between Saudi Arabia and Japan began in
1938 when Hafiz Wahba, Saudi envoy to England,
visited Japan to attend the inauguration of the
Tokyo Mosque. In reciprocation, Masayuki
Yokoyama, Japanese envoy to Egypt, visited Saudi
Arabia in 1939 and had an audience with King
Abdulaziz in Riyadh.
In
1953, Japan sent an economic delegation to Saudi
Arabia. In June 1955, the two countries formally
established diplomatic relations.
The Saudi-Japanese personal exchanges gathered momentum after Prince
Sultan bin Abdulaziz visited Japan in 1960. King
Faisal bin Abdulaziz' visit to Japan in 1971 was
followed by many a number of royal and official
visits, proving the excellent two-country
relations.
The
year 2005 is the 50th anniversary of our
official tie-ups, and will see a variety of
events particularly programmed for the occasion.
